Seasons Change
Congrats! We have made it through another summer in Tucson! The heat is so hard on our farmers (and volunteers) and we are so grateful for all the uncomfortable, sweaty work they do. We have a short farm update below but please note that we are moving to our *Winter Hours – 4pm – 6:30pm close** starting in October
This is an adjustment from last year so make sure to note in your calendars:
Winter Hours – 6:30m close – October through March
Summer Hours – 7pm close – April through September
Also, mark your calendars for our annual WINTER BREAK – NO Pick-ups on December 22/23 or December 29/30.
Last pick-up of 2026 will be Dec. 15/16. First pick-up of 2027 will be January 5/6.
The late summer / early fall rains have been a relief compared to the heat, but with that comes many challenges for our farmers. They have to manage the after effects of rain, which can mean dealing with rapidly growing weeds and increased pest activity. The wet weather has also been a challenge for winter squash and pumpkins this year. Water logged soil can cause root rot and leaves can be damaged from heavy rains and high humidity. Even though the harvest will be less abundant this year, we are still hoping to see a good amount of winter squash in our shares this year, including large and small varieties as well as some pumpkins and spaghetti squash. The wet weather can also affect crop planning. Soil that is too wet and heavy needs time to rest before it can be prepped for new planting. Several of our cool weather crops are already in the ground and doing great, but others have been delayed because of the wet weather.
What does all this mean for our CSA shares? For the time being, as long as weather stays fairly warm, we should continue to get typical summer crops like cucumbers, tomatoes, eggplant and okra in our shares. Last year we had cucumbers and tomatoes around Thanksgiving! Cooler weather crops like arugula and baby chard will start working their way into shares this month. By November we should start seeing radishes and turnips, spinach and baby bok choi. And before the end of the year we are hoping the early broccoli and cauliflower will be rolling in!
Looking ahead – we will start taking deposits for TURKEYS this week! Raised on open pasture with no antibiotics, no hormones, and a non-GMO grain supplement. Flash frozen at peak freshness with giblets included.
It may seem early, but Josh’s (CPR Meats) turkeys are always in high demand and if you want to secure yours, you will want to get your $20 deposit it. They are delivered to us and SHOULD BE PICKED UP the week BEFORE Thanksgiving (Nov. 17/18).
The turkeys range in size from small to large, (14 to 20+ lbs.) with the majority in the medium range. You cannot reserve a size, but we do our best to get you the size that works for you and your gathering – first come, first served for both Tuesday and Wednesday pick-ups.
